Bagassa guianensis Aubl. – Moraceae
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS
Heartwood yellow when freshly cut, sometimes with dark streaks, distinct from the pale yellow to yellowish white sapwood. After drying the heartwood becomes olive yellow and golden brown after light exposure. Radial surfaces with stripes and moderately lustrous longitudinal surfaces. Grain interlocked, texture medium and not distinctive odor.
DENSITY
Medium density wood, with density at 12% moisture content of 800 kg/m^3 and green density of 1070 kg/m^3.
DRYING
Air-dries slowly, without checking or warping. Slight tendency to warp in kiln-drying.
WORKABILITY
Easy to work with hand or machine tools. Previous boring is advisable before nailing.
DURABILITY
Heartwood resistant to white- and brown-rot fungi. Low resistance to weathering presenting checkings when exposed without protecting coverage.
PRESERVATION
Difficult to be preserved, even with pressure-vacuum systems.
USES
Civil and naval construction, carpentry, cabinet work, tool handles, furniture, doors, flooring, sliced veneers and others.
